The Pilbara region is recognised as a centre for the state’s mining activity. The mining and construction industries account for approximately 54 per cent of the labour force with accommodation and food services and the transport, postal and warehousing industries accounting for another 10 per cent. The Pilbara region has Australia’s largest oil and gas reserve. According to the Western Australian Department of Transport and Ports Australia, the two Pilbara ports of Port Hedland and Dampier were the two largest tonnage ports in Australia.
According to the 2011 Census, the Pilbara region had a population of almost 63,000 people representing a 42 per cent increase since the 2006 Census. This dramatic increase highlights the unprecedented growth occurring in the Pilbara RDA region. Over this period the Western Australian population increased by 14.2 per cent and the Australian population increased by 7.9 per cent.
